Nigeria is the largest producer of groundnut in Africa, accounting for more than half of Africa?s total production. Nigeria is also the third largest producer of groundnut and oil in the world after China and India. The Food and Agricultural organization puts the amount of groundnut and groundnut oil produced from 2011 to 2013 at 8,774,457 tons and 900,900 tons respectively. Groundnut manual processing has been existing in Nigeria for a long period of time especially in rural areas. Groundnut is majorly processed into groundnut oil, groundnut powder, and other local delicacies. However manual production of groundnut oil and powder is relatively slow and does not conform to the high hygiene standards required high end markets.
